Are you listening or hearing?

How many times have you stopped mid-sentence and someone says, “I’m listening”?

They’re not listening. They’re hearing.

There’s a big difference.

Hearing is background noise. Listening is focus. And not listening is rude.

If you don’t have time, say so. Step away and schedule it properly. But don’t pretend.

In meetings, put the phone away. Close the laptop. Emergencies can be handled outside. Otherwise, the speaker becomes background music.

So how do you truly listen?

Drop other tasks. Close the door. Clear your desk. Make eye contact. Set a time frame if needed. Take notes. Give your full attention.

It’s simple - yet rarely done well.

Great leaders are great listeners. They make people feel heard, respected, valued.

When people feel heard, they contribute more. They trust more. They follow more.

If you want to lead successfully, start here.

It all begins with listening.
