Is identity everything?

Identity.

It’s the distinguishing character of a business - and it’s the starting point of every successful hotel or restaurant project.

Without a clearly defined identity, architects, designers, operators - everyone - is guessing.

Identity shapes everything: construction costs, room size, facilities, staffing, pricing, and ultimately return on investment.

But identity isn’t just what ownership wants. It’s influenced by location, market demand, competition, infrastructure, seasonality, and branding potential.

And here’s the critical piece: differentiation.

In a saturated market, why should guests choose you over the hotel next door?

Yet we see generic properties everywhere - often driven by investors focused more on asset value than long-term vision. When identity is sacrificed, reputation suffers. And without reputation, you’re just another building.

Today’s largest consumer group, Millennials, demand more than a clean room and friendly service. They want character. Purpose. Difference.

So remember three words - in this order:

Identity. Difference. Reputation.

Without them, there is no real foundation for success.
