Most managers believe they’re good leaders.
They’re fair. They listen. They empower. Their team respects them.
Sound familiar?
But here’s the truth: respect is earned. It’s never automatic.
The only real way to know how you’re doing is honest self-reflection - and honest feedback. Anonymous staff surveys can reveal what your team truly thinks about your leadership. And sometimes, the gap between perception and reality is uncomfortable.
Ask yourself:
When did you last have a real conversation with a department head about their challenges? Do you invite open debate in meetings - or just give instructions? How often are you out with guests? With back-of-house staff? Do you ever criticize in public? Have you asked frontline employees for solutions to operational problems?
Great leaders don’t pretend to know everything.
They’re humble enough to ask. Strong enough to listen. Wise enough to give credit.
So - when was the last time you asked yourself the hard questions?
Because if you don’t, one day your team might answer them for you.
